What we’re looking for

We’re looking to work with up to three organisations which will be selected as finalists in the challenge. These will be organisations that are directly dealing with the social and environmental effects of non-sewered sanitation in their local region or catchment, and who want to better understand the issues and build a clear and actionable vision that could enable local communities and ecosystems to thrive.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, entrants must be either:

  • any public body or part of government in the UK (including but not limited to local authorities and national park authorities),
  • a registered charity in the United Kingdom,
  • a licensed water company

and hold an official or charitable mandate or responsibility over a UK region or catchment that they enter the challenge with.

Entrants are welcome to work with other organisations, including informal and unincorporated organisations, but the entrant will hold full responsibility for all aspects of participation in the challenge.

Assessment and Judging Process

Judging Criteria for Finalists

The judging criteria to select the finalists are:

Potential Scale of Social and Environmental Impact – 40%

We are looking to work with regions, catchments or groups of catchments in areas where there are significant proportions of homes off-sewer and that have the potential to have impact at scale.

The scoring of this criterion will be quantitative, based on the potential scale of the population and geographic area of the target. We will use your estimate of the approximate proportion of people or homes that are off-sewer, provided you can provide a basis for it.

Potential Depth of Social and Environmental Impact – 40%

We are looking to work with regions, catchments or groups of catchments in areas where there are significant issues to overcome, either social, environmental or both.

In this criterion, we will be asking you to set out particular social and/or environmental challenges in your area caused or aggravated by non-sewered sanitation, or the lack of a sewer network or capacity.

They may include, but are not limited to, habitat or biodiversity loss, degradation of ecosystems, loss of amenity, underserved or vulnerable populations, areas affected by disproportionate low income or deprivation, limitations or delays to home building and toilet deserts.

Capacity and Commitment to Deliver – 20%

We are looking to work with organisations who are committed to the Challenge and to which an analysis and evidence-based vision for potential solutions to overcome non-sewered sanitation issues would be beneficial and aligned with organisational priorities.

In this criterion, we will ask you to confirm you have the capacity to deliver against the challenge goals if selected as a finalist and then ask you to set out enabling conditions in your organisation that give your work the best chance of success.

Judging criteria to select the winner will be announced shortly, but will comprise the same 3 categories with updated descriptions.
